Seeds or transplants? What to buy

Seeds are cheaper; some crops are easier from small plants.

5 min read

A packet of seeds often costs about the same as one small plant, and can grow dozens. But some crops are easier for beginners to buy as young plants.

Easy from seed, sown directly

  • Beans and peas
  • Lettuce, salad greens and radishes
  • Zucchini and squash
  • Carrots and beets

Often easier as transplants

  • Tomatoes and peppers (they need a long head start indoors)
  • Perennial herbs like rosemary and thyme

Save on both

  • Share seed packets with friends; most hold more than a small garden needs
  • Check for a free seed library at your public library
  • Buy transplants early in the season, or at end-of-season sales for fall crops
